    Solutions Built to Last

From controlling cost volatility to creating clear and consistent paths to citizenship, there’s a tremendous need in our nation for effective long-term policy. By creating a powerful mediating force to counteract our duopoly, Forward can make that kind of policy possible.

Within the perpetual, partisan tug-of-war that our nation is mired in, it is all too easy to lose sight of where it’s all going. And the answer, sadly, is nowhere good. Each major party plays its games and puts on its political theater, and each pushes policy when and where it holds power. But meaningful, long-term solutions aren’t part of that equation - and in part, that’s because our major parties don’t want them to be.

For Republican and Democratic politicians alike, ‘think what would happen if the Other Side took power!’moc is a key selling point. The idea that the Other Side is going to undo all your progress, is going to take away everything sacred if it should ever gain control, is an idea that they prey upon. That constant tension keeps voters voting and donors donating, while perpetuating the fear that a third-party vote might allow Evil to triumph - in short, it oils the machine.

That’s no way for us to live. The American people need real and lasting solutions for our pressing issues. When it comes to immigration policy, we need to create a stable situation at our borders, and to understand the pathways to entering and joining our nation. When it comes to economic policy, we need to create peace of mind through long-term planning, to allow for effective investment and consistent economic mobility. And when it comes to infrastructure, energy, and environmental policy, any real progress is predicated on building 10-, 15-, or 20-year plans - the kind of plans that can never work in our current system.

All of this is exactly why we need to look Forward. Through a serious and significant new party, we can create a necessary counterbalance to the major parties in power, forcing them to work together towards answering critical questions, and freeing them from the twisted incentives of our current duopoly.

What We Bring to the Table: the Fulcrum

If we want to profoundly and meaningfully change our political game and the incentives that play into it, then we’re going to need to have seats at the table. That’s what building a viable, credible, durable new party is all about - we don’t just want to make a statement, we want to win elections. But we don’t need to outnumber the Democrats, and we don’t need to outnumber the Republicans. We just need enough for a fulcrum.

To have a fulcrum is to have influence over a political body by consistently denying either major party a majority. A fulcrum can be created at the level of the U.S. House or Senate, at the level of a state legislature, or even at the level of a city council or local school board. And wherever we can build it, we can make a world of difference through it.

By denying any party a majority, we can force our politicians to work together towards meaningful and lasting solutions. We can remove the toxic incentives towards negative campaigning, because there would be more than two options on the table. And we can empower our major parties to actually be better versions of themselves, to represent their constituents and their causes rather than be trapped in our perpetual tug of war and the terrible behavior that it encourages.

    • Working closely with statewide leadership, other regional leads (potentially including leads in your region), and eventually county- and town-level organizers in your region to track local party growth.
    • Identifying key potential volunteers, including prospective county leads and candidates for local office.

  • published Why Forward? in Who We Are 2024-01-16 20:34:35 -0500

    Why Forward?

In American politics, we are told to pick a side, to put our full faith in Team Red or Team Blue, and just fight. While this is nothing new, the social media age has made it all too easy to rile up, play up, and perpetuate this division, and our zero-sum party system has made it all too profitable to do just that. What we are left with is a tug-of-war where nobody wins and nothing gets done.

People are sick of it, and nowhere is that more evident than with trends in voter registration. Independents are now the largest voting bloc in the nation, and growing far faster than either major party. Therein lies an opportunity - if we can bring these frustrated citizens together, we can create a serious political force to challenge our duopoly and break its destructive incentives.

But it’s not quite so simple. We, after all, are the kind of people who don’t like being told how to think or what to believe. We are not going to fall in line behind a traditional party, whatever its policy stances may be.

That’s why Forward is working to build a new kind of party. We want to combine the strength of a state and national movement with the freedom of running and governing as an independent, allowing our candidates to bring their unique voices - and those of their constituents - to the table.

Our shared vision is a politics that welcomes new ideas, works effectively towards real solutions, and empowers dynamic leadership at every level, from senators and governors, to mayors and city councilors, to the people of our communities. We work better when we work together, and we want to make that possible.

    Mental Health

As of late 2021, nearly a third of adults in Florida reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorders - roughly the national average. More than one in eight adolescents reported having a major depressive episode in 2019. Deaths of despair - including suicides, overdoses, and alcohol disease - are up across virtually every demographic. Our nation’s mental health crisis has many faces, but it is a crisis through and through.

When mental health is mentioned in our discourse, it tends to be in the context of identification and treatment. And indeed, these are critical problems that demand critical problem solving. Individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, or addiction, not receiving the attention or care that they need, can be a danger to themselves and sometimes - tragically - to others.

But there is also something deeper underlying our nation’s mental health crisis. It is a need for hope and empowerment, for a sense of community and belonging. At its very core, this is the reason that the Forward Party exists, the reason that we seek better representation and grassroots-driven, dynamic problem solving to help people feel freer, to help communities thrive, and to help our democracy work. It is to give us all something to look forward to, because we so dearly need it.

    Jobs

Currently, more than a million Floridians work in jobs at a high risk of being phased out due to automation. Hundreds of thousands more are in danger of losing their jobs to AI. Many more work in new gig economies, where a lack of structure and high volatility make things feel all too often unstable. And while many are understandably worried about the future of their industries, our major-party politicians offer little in the way of real solutions.

Though we may try to delay it, major industrial shift is coming. And if we’re going to face it head-on, then we’ll need the proper aid and transition programs for those in affected industries. We’re going to need major investment in fields that can withstand future trends. And we’re going to need to define, structure, and regulate new ways of working to ensure that they are sustainable, and that those who pursue them are able to make a reasonable living.

The economic and industrial challenges aren’t insurmountable. They don’t have to spell doom and gloom. But if we want to ensure more, better jobs in more future-friendly fields for more Floridians tomorrow, then we’re going to need to apply some serious Forward thinking today.

  • I’m uncomfortable with the lack of stated top-down policy. How can I vote for a party if I don’t know what it stands for?

    Answer

Here’s the thing - you don’t vote for a party. You vote for a candidate, and the candidates that fly under the Forward banner are going to tell you what ideas they intend to bring to the table, and how they intend to act when elected. We’re going to hold them to that.

Now, if you want to support our party, and become a part of this movement to empower both problem solvers and the voters they serve, to change the way we do politics for the better, then of course, please do! But rest assured, we will never ask you to vote without knowing exactly who and what you’re voting for.

So you’re some sort of centrist / moderate party?

    Answer

Also no. The Forward movement features a wide range of voices from across the political spectrum, all with a shared passion for working together towards solutions for the critical issues of our time. We believe great ideas can come from anywhere - left, right, or center - and that’s exactly why it is so essential that we listen to one another, and take a data-driven and pragmatic approach to finding what works.
